Akagera National Park is the only savannah park in Rwanda, stalked with numerous wildlife and bird species. Akagera National Park is located just roughly 2 hours’ drive from Kigali, where you can easily make a day trip to Akagera National Park and enjoy a full day game drive and return back on the same day to Kigali. However, the majority will as well prefer to have an overnight in the park to enjoy more of the wildlife encounter and other activities such as boat ride, and night game drives.

The Giraffe loop and Kilala plains are the most famous areas for the greater game drives, as more animals are sighted in the two areas than anywhere else. The park is as well-known for the Big Five, as lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes are often sighted in the park. Rhinos are still under monitoring before being released into the wilderness. Those who do night game drives, will often come across the leopards in the evening hours.

Some of the animals in Akagera National Park sighted include the antelopes like the impalas, topis, bushbucks, waterbucks, greater eland, and other wildlife’s such as giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, zebras, hyenas, etc.

The park is also stalked with a number of bird species and over 470 birds have been recorded here.

Safari Game Drive at Akagera National Park, can be much enjoyed by using a 4 x 4 safari land cruiser, which will enable you to access all parts of the park, with a pop up roof, for game viewing.

The park is only accessed from the southern gate which is near to the reception, only those who sleep at Magashi Tented Camp, have right to access the park from the Northern gate, near to their accommodation.

The park entry fees are valid for 24 hours, or 2 days, and are counted based per night stay.
