Bird Watching at Akagera National park or Nyungwe National Park,  Akagera Park is the only Savannah park in the country of a thousand hills, boasts with over 480 bird species both Migratory and residential birds which do live in the diversity of rolling hills, woodlands, forests, seasonal and permanent swamps, lakes, Savannah vegetation and sticking landscape within the park area, both inside and outside the park, since they are mobile. The Akagera National park features savanna birds such as the black-headed gonolek and those associated with swamps and lakes, including storks and cranes. The bird watching can be done as well in the Nyungwe National Park known for some endemic birds like blue turaco.

During bird watching at akagera National park , you can spot the following birds: Balaeniceps rex (shoebill) and Agapornis fischeri (Fischer’s lovebird) are also can be seen during your birding safari with Akagera National Park. Among the common species you will see on your safari are; the beautiful lilac-breasted roller, crested barbet, black headed gonalek, ross’s turaco, heuglin’s robin-chat as well as the grey hornbill among others.

Bird Watching at Akagera National Park can be done either in the morning or in the evening during cool hours of the day.

It’s Rwanda’s best bird watching destination outside of Nyungwe Forest National Park.

The many kilometers of waterside habitat support African eagles, kingfishers, herons, ibises, storks, egrets, crakes, rails, cormorants, darts and pelicans.

Seasonal visitors include large flocks of ducks, bee-eaters and terns, and the woodlands areas are particularly good places for barbets, shrikes, orioles and weavers.

Short boat trips are available on Akagera’s lakes which will give you the opportunity to get close to the plentiful water birds including numerous African fish eagles, marabou stork, crowned cranes, open-billed stork, cormorants, herons and egrets.

If you are lucky you may even get to see the elusive shoebill stork.
