Mabira Forest is one of the last remaining tropical rainforests in Uganda, currently under threat from deforestation. However, recent developments in tourism have contributed to the forest’s resurgence.
Spanning 300 square kilometers, Mabira Forest is located along the Kampala-Jinja Highway, with its terrain consisting of valleys, hills, and areas fringed by papyrus swamps and savannah near the shores of Lake Victoria. The forest is home to over 300 endemic plant species and 9 endangered mammals, including the short-tailed fruit bat, Mangabey, baboon, colobus monkeys, butterflies, and a variety of birds. The forest boasts 218 species of butterflies, 23 species of mammals, including primates, and 95 species of moths. Notable bird species found in the Mabira Forest Reserve include the red-headed bluebill, black-bellied seedcracker, Cassin’s hawk-eagle, purple-throated cuckoo, forest wood hoopoe, and tit hylia, among others.
