Gorilla trekking at Mgahinga National Park, is one of the best spots to trek the mountain gorillas, as the park is also well known for harboring the gorillas.

Uganda gorilla trekking is one of the most famous adventure activities that most tourists visiting Uganda end up undertaking during the safari holiday in Uganda.

Mgahinga National Park is located in the southern part of Uganda, in Kisoro district which is roughly 8 hour’s drive from Kampala city, and 2 -3 hour’s drive from Kigali city. The park borders Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park in Congo. Indeed they share the same mountain ranges, only geographical location differs them.

The park is a mountain range, interlocking together, that has now become homes to the endangered mountain gorilla. Majority of tourists are famous with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, for gorillas.

The park is famous for the gorillas, golden monkeys, batwa culture, bird watching and the hiking mountains.

Batwa culture is one of the key activities for the tourist’s visiting Mgahinga to find out about their traits.

Gorilla trekking at Mgahinga National Park, starts as early as 7.30 am, with all tourists assembling for briefing at the Ntebeko Entrance gate and at around 8:00am, the briefing kicks off.

Mgahinga National Park has only 1 gorilla family, which has 13 members. Visitors are encouraged to keep time and make it to the park on time.

You will later find your way into the jungle, hiking up hills, to meet the gorillas, as they are often found feeding on the mountain slopes.

On finding the gorillas, an hour will be allowed for you to stay with the gorillas, watching them play and room around as you take the photos and videos of them.

Later you will walk back to the starting point and meet your guide to transfer you, to your next destination.

For those who need walking sticks, they are available at the park, and in case you would need a service of a porter, they are also ready to offer you the support at a small fees ranging from 15$ – 20$.

The gorilla trekking is fun and full of adventure.

Gorilla trekking at Mgahinga National Park, is very easy to access via Kigali as you can easily drive there via the Cyanika border which is just 3 – 4 hour’s drive away from Kigali.

Those on a short stay, can as well arrange 1 day gorilla trekking, with a pick up at night and drive to the park for the trekking in the next morning. 2 days gorilla trekking is very famous as well, for those having a short stay and tight budget but would wish to meet the gorillas.

Visiting Mgahinga National Park

The gorilla permit goes for 700 dollars per person, and advance booking is required as only 8 permits are available per day.

For the accommodation in Mgahinga National Park, a number of hotels and lodges do exist in Kisoro town, so one can easily book an accommodation, but you should have means to the park trekking point.
