Akagera National Park, the only savanna Park in Rwanda, offers a great opportunity of viewing the big five animals in their wilderness. With the introduction of the Hot air balloon, now the visitors of the park can explore the beauty of the park with an aerial view, the first of its kind in the country of a thousand hills. This is yet another exciting product to Rwanda’s adventure tourism experiences in addition to others including gorilla trekking through Volcanoes National Park, hiking in the presence of chimpanzee and other 13 primate species in Nyungwe National Park as well as the famous Canopy which is a 90 meters suspended bridge in Nyungwe that also offer a spectacular scenery view of the forest from top of the trees. Balloon Safaris in Akagera National Park will give visitors an exciting new perspective of Akagera’s beautiful and unique landscapes by viewing the park and its surroundings, animals in the park and being able to move to places from all corners of the park that was not unreachable by safaris cars that were mainly following limited routes.

Balloon Safaris in Akagera National Park are conducted in two hot air balloons that can accommodate 4 to 6 guests. The balloons can climb as high as 100m to 1000 m above the park’s scenic savanna in search for big 5 animals, namely, elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards and buffaloes as well as other species of wildlife including antelopes, giraffes, zebra, among the many.

Balloon Safaris in Akagera National Park takes off from Kayitaba point, in just 5 minutes’ drive from the South Entrance gate of Akagera National Park. You will be present at the takeoff area at 5:15 am (adjustable depending on sunrise time), given instructions while you watch the preparation of the hot air balloon.

After the preparations are over, you are invited in the basket and flight starts. During the flight you will enjoy the calmness with an amazing view of Akagera National Park while watching the sunrise over Lake Ihema and spotting different animals from the sky. This experience finishes with a champagne ceremony after landing as hot air balloon tradition and receiving a flight certificate signed by pilots as a memory of this unforgettable day.
