Rwanda Honeymoon Safari: Itineraries, Lodges, and Costs

A Rwanda honeymoon safari pairs one extraordinary morning with the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park with four or five slow days at Lake Kivu, in Nyungwe Forest, or at a lodge with nothing on the schedule. Seven days costs about $4,200 per person at mid-range lodges and $6,000 and up at luxury properties in 2026, including the $1,500 gorilla permit, a private vehicle and driver-guide, and all lodges and meals as listed. Rwanda works for honeymoons because the distances are short (two to five hours between parks on paved roads), the country is among the safest in Africa, and the lodge tier near the gorillas includes some of the best properties on the continent. This guide lays out the routes couples actually book with Rwanda Eco Company and Safaris, the lodges, and the timing mistakes to avoid.

The 7-day honeymoon route

This is the shape of most Rwanda honeymoons, whichever lodge tier you choose.

  • Day 1, Kigali. Arrive, private transfer, a night at The Retreat or the Kigali Serena. If you land before noon, the Genocide Memorial and a walk through Nyamirambo are worth the afternoon.
  • Days 2 to 3, Volcanoes National Park. Drive 2.5 hours to Kinigi. Trek the gorillas on the morning of day 3, not day 2, so a delayed flight cannot cost you the permit. Day 2 afternoon is for the lodge.
  • Day 4, a rest day in the volcanoes. Golden monkey tracking at 7:00 am for the energetic, or a late breakfast and a spa afternoon. This is the day couples skip when they compress the trip, and the one they most often say they wished they had kept.
  • Days 5 to 6, Lake Kivu. The lake road to Kibuye or Gisenyi, a sunset boat trip, two nights at Cleo Lake Kivu or Kivu Serena. Nothing is scheduled.
  • Day 7, Kigali and home. Three hours back to the airport, or two more nights in Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzees and the canopy walk before flying out.

The 6 Days Gorilla and Lake Kivu Safari is this route without the Nyungwe extension. The 7 Days Luxury Rwanda Safari runs it in reverse, starting in Nyungwe and finishing with the gorillas.

Lodges couples choose

Volcanoes National Park. At the top of the market, Bisate Lodge (six villas in a reforested volcanic crater), One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, and Singita Kwitonda Lodge are the three properties honeymoon couples ask for by name. They cost roughly $1,500 to $3,000 per person per night, fully inclusive. At a quarter of that, Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel and Virunga Lodge give you a private cottage with a volcano view and a fire in the evening.

Lake Kivu. The lake is where the honeymoon slows down. Cleo Lake Kivu in Kibuye has the best position, on a peninsula with the water on three sides. Kivu Serena in Gisenyi has a beach and a pool. Ask for a lake-facing room; it is the difference between the two tiers at the same hotel.

Nyungwe Forest. One&Only Nyungwe House sits inside a working tea plantation on the forest edge and is the single most-photographed honeymoon property in Rwanda. The mid-range alternative is Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, with the same view from a lower price.

Akagera. For couples who want big game as well as gorillas, Wilderness Magashi Camp on Lake Rwanyakazinga adds two nights of lions, rhinos, and boat safaris at the end of the route. It turns a 7-day honeymoon into 9. Our luxury Rwanda safari guide covers this tier in more depth.

Timing a honeymoon around the gorillas

Gorilla permits are date-specific and non-refundable, and the honeymoon is usually booked around a wedding date that cannot move. Three rules follow from that. Book the permit 4 to 6 months ahead for June to September or the December holidays, and earlier if you want one of the six-villa lodges. Put the trek on day 3, so the first flight delay does not cost you the $1,500. And keep a rest day after the trek; the hike can be anything from 45 minutes to 4 hours each way depending on which family the rangers assign.

“Couples tell us the gorillas were the moment, but the lake was the honeymoon,” says Reginal Hakizimana, founder of Rwanda Eco Company and Safaris. “We build the week around both.”

The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are the best time to trek. See our best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda guide for the month-by-month picture. The wetter months of March to May are quieter and some luxury lodges discount them, which suits couples who do not mind rain in the afternoons.

Adding a beach

Kigali has direct flights to Zanzibar and Mombasa in under three hours. The pattern that works is 5 to 6 days in Rwanda first, while you have the energy for a trek, then 4 to 5 nights on the coast. We arrange the Rwanda portion and the flights; the beach stay can be booked through us or directly.

Rwanda Eco Company and Safaris is a Kigali-based operator licensed by the Rwanda Development Board and a member of RTTA, ASTA, ATTA, and USTOA, with a 5.0 rating from 238 TripAdvisor reviews. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Rwanda honeymoon safari cost? +

A 6-day gorilla and Lake Kivu honeymoon at mid-range lodges costs about $4,232 per person. A 7-day luxury honeymoon with properties such as One&Only Gorilla's Nest and One&Only Nyungwe House starts at $6,000 per person. Both include the $1,500 gorilla permit, a private vehicle and driver-guide, lodges, and meals as listed.

Is Rwanda a good honeymoon destination? +

Yes, for couples who want one extraordinary wildlife morning and the rest of the week quiet. Rwanda is safe, the parks are two to five hours apart on paved roads, and the lodge tier runs from boutique hotels to some of the best lodges in Africa. It is not the right fit for couples who want a beach for a full week; add Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast for that.

What is the best honeymoon itinerary in Rwanda? +

Seven days: a night in Kigali, two nights at Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking with a rest day after, two nights at Lake Kivu, and one or two nights in Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzees and the canopy walk. Trek on day 3, not day 2, so a delayed flight cannot cost you the permit.

Which lodges are best for a honeymoon in Rwanda? +

At Volcanoes National Park: Bisate Lodge, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, Singita Kwitonda, or, at a lower price, Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel. At Lake Kivu: Cleo Lake Kivu or Kivu Serena. In Nyungwe: One&Only Nyungwe House. In Kigali: The Retreat. Most lodges offer honeymoon touches such as private dinners when told in advance.

When is the best time for a Rwanda honeymoon? +

June to September and December to February are the dry seasons and the best time to trek. June wedding couples traveling in July or August should book 6 months ahead. March to May is wetter but quieter, and some luxury lodges offer lower rates then.

Can you combine a Rwanda honeymoon with a beach? +

Yes. Kigali has direct flights to Zanzibar and Mombasa in under three hours. The usual pattern is 5 to 6 days in Rwanda followed by 4 to 5 nights on the coast. Rwanda Eco Company arranges the Rwanda portion and the flights.
