Luxury Rwanda Safari 2026: Lodges, Itineraries, and What It Costs

A luxury Rwanda safari costs $6,000 to $12,500 per person for 7 to 9 days in 2026, with the price driven almost entirely by the lodge tier and whether you drive or fly between parks. The $1,500 Rwanda Development Board (RDB) gorilla permit is identical at every price point, and so is the hour you spend with the gorillas. What a luxury itinerary buys is the lodge you return to (Singita Kwitonda, Bisate, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest), a private vehicle and driver-guide for the whole trip, helicopter transfers in place of 3 to 5 hour drives, and a pace with no 4:30 am departures except trek day. Rwanda Eco Company and Safaris builds these itineraries privately for each party; the two fixed-price versions below are the starting points.

Both prices are per person sharing for two travelers and include the permits listed, all accommodation and meals as specified, a private vehicle and driver-guide, and park fees. For how these compare with mid-range and budget options, see our Rwanda safari packages guide.

Where luxury actually shows up on a Rwanda safari

Rwanda’s parks are small and close together, so the trip is built around four or five nights in exceptional places rather than long transfers. The money goes to three things.

The lodge. The ultra-luxury tier near Volcanoes National Park is four properties, each with 6 to 12 rooms: Singita Kwitonda Lodge on the park boundary, Bisate Lodge in its own reforested crater, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest in a eucalyptus forest below the volcanoes, and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, which is community-owned and returns its revenue to the villages around the park. Nightly rates at this tier run roughly $1,500 to $3,000 per person, fully inclusive. One step down, Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel and Virunga Lodge deliver private cottages and volcano views for a fraction of that.

The transfers. Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is 2.5 hours by road or 25 minutes by helicopter. Kigali to Nyungwe is 5 hours or 50 minutes. Helicopters are priced per flight rather than per seat, so a couple or a family of four can replace two long drives for less than the cost of one extra lodge night.

The pace. A luxury itinerary spends two nights near Volcanoes National Park so that trek day is not followed by a drive. The second day goes to golden monkey tracking, the Dian Fossey tomb hike, or nothing at all.

The 7-day luxury route

This is the route most of our luxury guests take, and it is the backbone of the 7 Days Luxury Rwanda Safari.

  • Day 1, Kigali. Private airport transfer, the Kigali Genocide Memorial, dinner at the Marriott or The Retreat.
  • Days 2 to 3, Nyungwe Forest. Chimpanzee tracking at dawn, the canopy walk, tea on the terrace at One&Only Nyungwe House, which sits inside a working tea estate.
  • Day 4, Lake Kivu. The drive north along the lake, a sunset cruise, a night at Cleo Lake Kivu or Kivu Serena.
  • Days 5 to 6, Volcanoes National Park. Gorilla trekking on day 5, golden monkeys or a rest day on day 6, two nights at Gorilla’s Nest, Bisate, or Singita.
  • Day 7, Kigali. Return transfer and departure.

Add Akagera for two nights at Wilderness Magashi Camp, on the shore of Lake Rwanyakazinga, and the route becomes nine days with lions, rhinos, and boat safaris at the end rather than the beginning.

The flying safari: Rwanda in nine days without the roads

The 9 Days Rwanda Luxury Flying Safari replaces every long transfer with a helicopter and adds a second gorilla permit, so you trek two different families on two mornings. The route runs Kigali, Akagera (Magashi), Nyungwe (Nyungwe House), and Volcanoes (Bisate or Singita), with the lake crossed by air rather than road. At $12,476 per person it is the most expensive fixed-price itinerary we sell, and the one with the fewest hours in a vehicle: under four across nine days.

“The difference a luxury guest notices is not the gorillas, it is the evenings,” says Reginal Hakizimana, founder of Rwanda Eco Company and Safaris. “Coming off the volcano to a fire, a massage, and dinner at Bisate is a very different trip from the same trek followed by a three-hour drive.”

What luxury does not change

Gorilla trekking is run by RDB, and every visitor follows the same rules: a maximum of eight people per gorilla family, one hour with the group, a 7:00 am briefing at the Kinigi headquarters, and a minimum age of 15. There is no private trek and no way to buy a shorter hike. What a good operator does at this tier is request a family matched to your fitness, arrange a porter, and have the vehicle waiting at the trailhead rather than the car park. Our luxury vs budget gorilla safari comparison goes through this in detail.

Booking a luxury Rwanda safari: timing and deposits

Ultra-luxury lodges have 6 to 12 rooms and sell out for June to September and the December holidays 6 to 12 months ahead. Gorilla permits for those dates go 4 to 6 months ahead. We hold lodge space on request for 48 hours while permits are confirmed, then take a 30 percent deposit with the balance due 60 days before travel. All of our itineraries at this tier are private; nothing is shared with other guests except the gorilla group itself.

Rwanda Eco Company and Safaris is a Kigali-based operator licensed by RDB and a member of RTTA, ASTA, ATTA, and USTOA, with a 5.0 rating from 238 TripAdvisor reviews. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a luxury Rwanda safari cost? +

A 7-day luxury Rwanda safari with premium lodges and a private vehicle starts at about $6,000 per person in 2026. A 9-day flying safari with helicopter transfers and ultra-luxury lodges such as Bisate or Singita Kwitonda runs about $12,476 per person. Ultra-luxury lodges near Volcanoes National Park charge roughly $1,500 to $3,000 per person per night, and the $1,500 gorilla permit is the same at every tier.

Which are the best luxury lodges in Rwanda? +

Near Volcanoes National Park: Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Bisate Lodge, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. In Nyungwe: One&Only Nyungwe House. In Akagera: Wilderness Magashi Camp. In Kigali: The Retreat, Kigali Serena, and the Kigali Marriott. Rwanda Eco Company books all of them as part of a private itinerary.

Is gorilla trekking different on a luxury safari? +

No. Every visitor joins a group of up to eight, is assigned a gorilla family at the Kinigi briefing, and spends one hour with the gorillas. Luxury changes the lodge you wake up in, the porter and private vehicle arranged for you, and whether you drive or fly to the park. It does not change the trek itself.

How many days should a luxury Rwanda safari be? +

Seven days is the standard: Kigali, two nights at Volcanoes National Park for gorillas and golden monkeys, two nights at Lake Kivu or Nyungwe, and a Kigali night at either end. Nine to ten days adds Akagera for the Big Five. Helicopter transfers can cut a 10-day drive-based route to 7 days.

Can you fly between parks in Rwanda? +

Yes. Helicopter transfers run from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, Akagera, and Nyungwe, cutting 2.5 to 5 hour drives to 25 to 50 minutes. They are priced per flight, not per person, so they make the most sense for two to four travelers.

When is the best time for a luxury Rwanda safari? +

June to September and December to February are the dry seasons and the best time for trekking and game drives. Ultra-luxury lodges with 6 to 12 rooms sell out 6 to 12 months ahead for those dates, so the booking window is longer than for a mid-range trip.
