Rwanda Visa Overview
Rwanda offers a very traveler-friendly visa policy. Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport, or apply for an e-visa before travel.
E-Visa (Recommended)
Apply online at the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration website at least 7 days before travel. Cost is $50 USD for most nationalities. Processing typically takes 2-3 business days. Print or save the e-visa confirmation to present on arrival.

Visa on Arrival
Available at Kigali International Airport for most nationalities. Cost is $50 USD. Pay by cash (USD preferred) or card. Processing on arrival is usually quick, 15-30 minutes at the immigration hall.
Nationalities Exempt from Visa
Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa for Rwanda for stays up to 90 days: all African Union member states (including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa), Germany, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, and several others.
Always verify the current list at the Rwandan immigration website before travel, as this policy is updated periodically.
Recommended Approach for US, UK, EU, and Australian Travelers
- Apply for an e-visa 1-2 weeks before your travel date
- Pay online ($50 USD)
- Receive approval email within 2-3 business days
- Print the approval and bring it to the airport
- Present at immigration with your passport
This is faster and more convenient than visa on arrival, especially if you are arriving on a long-haul flight after midnight when immigration queues can be longer.
Passport Validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from Rwanda.
East Africa Tourist Visa (Combination Travel)
If your itinerary includes Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100 USD) allows multiple entries across all three countries for 90 days. This is excellent value for a combination East Africa safari. Apply through the Rwanda or Uganda e-visa portals.
