The four countries, and what each is for
East Africa is not one destination priced one way. Each country does a different job in an itinerary:
- Rwanda. Mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, golden monkeys, chimpanzees in Nyungwe, and the shortest distances in the region. Kigali to the park gate is about 2.5 hours on good tarmac. Gorilla permit: $1,500, set by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
- Uganda. Mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the region’s best chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, and big game in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. Gorilla permit: $800. The trade is distance, with Bwindi 8 to 10 hours by road from Entebbe.
- Kenya. The Maasai Mara, Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro, and the strongest internal flight network in the region, which is what makes it easy to pair with a primate country.
- Tanzania. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Kilimanjaro. The longest internal distances and its own visa regime.
The IUCN counts just over 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild, roughly 60% of them in the Virunga range and Bwindi. That is the reason a gorilla permit costs what it does and why it anchors the price of any itinerary that includes one.
What actually sets the price
Permits. A Rwanda gorilla permit is $1,500 and a Uganda permit is $800. A chimpanzee permit in Kibale is $250. Add a gorilla permit in each of two countries and you have put $2,300 per person into the quote before a single night of lodging.
Internal flights. Crossing between Kigali and Nairobi, or Entebbe and Kilimanjaro, is a flight, not a drive. Budget $250 to $600 per sector. A package that quotes low and then adds flights later is not cheaper, it is incomplete.
Days lost to borders. This is the cost nobody quotes. Every land crossing takes half a day at minimum. Every internal flight takes most of one. A 10-day, three-country itinerary can easily spend three of its days moving.

Route 1: Rwanda and Uganda, 10 to 14 days, about $4,500 to $6,000

Route 2: Rwanda plus a plains country, 10 to 12 days, about $5,500 to $7,000
The contrast route. Gorillas first in Rwanda, then a flight to the Maasai Mara or the Serengeti for big cats and, in season, the wildebeest migration.
Why it works: these are the two things East Africa does better than anywhere else, and they are completely different experiences. Doing both in one trip is the strongest argument for a multi-country package at all.
What it costs: more, because of the flight sector and because plains lodges price higher than forest lodges. The Tanzania leg also needs its own visa.
Best for: first-time visitors to Africa making one big trip.
Route 3: three or more countries, 14 to 21 days, from about $7,000

The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100, is valid 90 days, allows multiple entries, and covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya on one document. You buy it from whichever of the three you enter first. Tanzania is not part of the scheme and charges its own visa, typically $50 to $100.
