What to Prepare and Plan Before Trekking
When planning your gorilla trek in Rwanda, it is helpful to understand what is required from your side, as well as what will be given and shared with you during your trek. There are a few things you will need to have in place before you head to Rwanda. Things to note include the following:
Number of Days Required
The number of days you may wish to spend in Rwanda may depend on whether your visit to the country is mainly to focus on a gorilla trekking adventure, or whether you wish to explore any of the other incredible safari destinations in the country, such as the Akagera National Park or the Nyungwe National Park.
A standard itinerary that primarily focuses on a gorilla trekking experience, will require a stay of around 4 to 5 days. This will give you time to arrive in Kigali and unwind for the first night, and then continue onto the Volcanoes National Park in preparation for your gorilla trek. You may wish to include a Golden Monkey trek in your itinerary. If you are incorporating a safari, you may wish to spend 7 to 10 days, to explore the wonders of incredible Rwanda.
Budgeting: Gorilla Permits and Accommodation
Part of the planning process includes budgeting for this one-of-a-kind adventure. Ensure you save for your gorilla trekking permits, as well as accommodation considerations. With packages starting from around $2000 at the least, climbing in total depending on your accommodation choice, excursions and level of service, for example group travel or a private experience.
At Rwanda Eco tours, our team will create incredible itineraries that include hotels and lodges located in close proximity to the start of your gorilla trek, offering quality accommodation in outstanding settings. Capture views of the Virungu mountains and admire the eco-friendly practices of the staff along with exceptional customer service.
Medical Requirements
Traveling to Rwanda will require certain health checks, including having a yellow fever vaccination, and a malaria prophylactic. You will need to take your yellow fever certificate with you when you travel to Rwanda. Any dietary requirements or allergies should be given to your Rwanda Eco Tours consultant at the time of your booking, so that all accommodation establishments are aware and can prepare before your arrival.
What to Pack
When packing for your Rwanda gorilla trek, there are several items that should be in your suitcase. Trekking trails can range from slow and steady to somewhat strenuous, and so ensuring you have the appropriate clothing is very important. When preparing for your gorilla trek, consider packing:
- Sturdy hiking boots
- Long-sleeved shirts and pants
- Rain jacket
- Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation
- Hat or cap
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Water bottle
- Camera (note: no flash photography is allowed)
Perhaps Do a Little Research
There are a lot of articles, books and shared stories about what to expect on a gorilla trek, and doing a little reading and research ahead of time, can assist in your preparation for your own adventure. Former trekkers may share tips and stories that can enhance your experience. You may also want to work on fitness levels, in preparation for your hike. While gorilla trekking is available and possible for visitors across all fitness levels, aged 15 and over, being in your best health is always a good idea.
- Research and book accommodations that support local communities and promote eco-tourism.
Costs: Permits & Packages
Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda currently cost $1,500 per person per day. These permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and include:
- Park entry fees
- Ranger guides
- One hour with the gorillas
There are a maximum of 96 permits issued to visitors daily, and booking well in advance (at least 6 months ahead of your trekking date if possible), is recommended. Your Rwanda Eco Tours consultant will ensure this is secured for you. It is important to note, that the hiring of a porter, which is highly recommended, will be an extra cost. This is usually between $15 and $20 per person, and their assistance with carrying your backpack, will be invaluable.
What to Expect On Gorilla Trekking
Your day will start really early, with a start around 7.30am. Your guide will take you to the Volcanoes National Park’s Head Office. Permits in hand, your guide will take care of formalities and you will be assigned a family of gorillas to trek. Depending on the routing you take and the location of the gorillas, your trek could take anything from under an hour to a couple of hours.
Masks may be required when you finally encounter the gorillas to protect them from contracting any human diseases. You will get to spend one hour with the gorilla family once they have been located. You may stop during your trek to enjoy a picnic lunch, or enjoy this meal back at your hotel should you reach your gorilla family in a short amount of time. After your encounter and once you have bid your porter and guide farewell, you will be taken back to your hotel or lodge for the rest of your day at leisure.
Safety and Etiquette on a Gorilla Trek
Your guide will explain the dos and don’ts for your gorilla trek, and how you are expected to behave when out on the trails in search of these gentle giants. Being respectful of your surrounding ecosystem and the integrity and safety of the gorillas, is paramount, and under the guidance of your guide and with the support of your porter, you will be treading lightly through the wilderness in a still and respectful manner.
Some etiquette tips include:
- Maintain a safe distance from the gorillas and avoid sudden movements.
- Avoid touching or feeding the gorillas, as this can disrupt their natural behavior.
- Keep your voice low and avoid making loud noises.
- Respect the local culture and customs, respect the natural habitat, and be mindful of your impact on the environment.
