Besides tracking mountain gorillas in Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park, rare golden monkeys have been sighted in the magnificent Virunga Mountains for quite a long time. They are largely found within the Great Virunga Mountains ranges of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. There are several large groups of Golden Monkeys that have been habituated for visitors, to see them flit about in the bamboo forest regions of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
Golden monkeys in Rwanda live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes and habituation has helped them to overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists. These rare species are also listed as endangered – and Volcanoes national park currently has two habituated golden monkeys’ troops that are available for visiting by tourists in the park, both of which make about 80 members.
The trekking adventure begins at 7:00am local time. For lifetime experiences with these striking creatures, permits can be purchased at $100 per visitor.
The trek can last up to four hours with only one hour of face to face encounter with the primates, to observe their social life, such as feeding, grooming, and mating if you’re lucky.
