Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes, stretching 2,700 square kilometers along Rwanda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s a freshwater lake, deeper than 480 meters in places, with crystal-clear water and no crocodiles or hippopotamuses. The combination makes it one of the only African lakes where it’s safe to swim.
Boat trips are the primary draw. Half-day and full-day boat excursions visit coffee plantations along the shoreline, traditional fishing villages, and small islands. Napoleon Island (named for its hat-like shape) is home to a colony of fruit bats and is a popular hike-and-boat day trip.
Coffee plantation tours at properties like Kinunu let visitors meet farmers, see the harvest and processing, and taste fresh-roasted Rwandan coffee at the source.
Cycling the Congo Nile Trail is for the adventurous. The 227 km trail runs the length of Lake Kivu’s eastern shore from Rubavu in the north to Rusizi in the south. Stretches can be cycled in segments or completed end-to-end over 5-10 days.
Sunset cruises are a classic Lake Kivu activity. Locally crafted wooden boats depart at golden hour from Kibuye and Rubavu. Long traditional songs are sung by the fisherman; the rowing rhythm matches the call-and-response of the song.
Swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding are all common. The water is fresh, calm, and clean.
Three towns serve as access points to Lake Kivu:
Cleo Lake Kivu Hotel (luxury) and Lake Kivu Serena Hotel (luxury) anchor the Kibuye and Rubavu lakeshores. Mid-range options like Mantis Kivu Marina Bay and budget guesthouses are available throughout. Many lodges offer infinity pools that blend into the lake view.
