When Is the Best Time for an East Africa Safari?

The best time for an East Africa Safari depends on what you want to experience. Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have different weather patterns, and the ideal months can vary depending on whether you are planning gorilla trekking, a wildlife safari, the Great Migration or a beach holiday.

Rwanda

For gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, the drier months from June to September are generally preferred because the trails are less muddy and easier to hike. These months also work well for wildlife viewing in Akagera and activities in Nyungwe, although all three parks can be visited throughout the year.

Uganda

For gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris, June to August and December to February are generally good choices because conditions are drier and roads and trails are easier to navigate. Chimpanzee trekking is possible year-round, and the wetter months can also offer good tracking conditions in Kibale.

Kenya

June to October is a popular period for wildlife safaris in Kenya, with generally dry conditions and good game viewing. If the Great Migration is your priority, July to October is an important period for the Maasai Mara, although the exact timing of the herds changes each year.

Tanzania

The dry season from June to October is popular for wildlife viewing in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. For the Great Migration, the best area to visit changes throughout the year as the herds move through the Serengeti and towards Kenya.
