Overview

Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is one of Africa’s most biologically diverse forests, an ancient rainforest that has never been glaciated, surviving as a refuge for extraordinary biodiversity.

Uganda gorilla permits are more affordable than Rwanda’s ($800 vs. $1,500), making this a popular choice for travelers who want the gorilla experience at a lower overall cost. The forest is denser and the terrain more rugged than Volcanoes NP, which many trekkers find adds to the authentic, adventurous feel of the experience.

Itinerary Summary

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bwindi

Arrive Entebbe/Kampala. Transfer to Bwindi (approximately 8 hours by road, or 1-hour flight to Kisoro airstrip). En route, experience Uganda’s dramatic landscapes, rolling hills, tea plantations, and the Rift Valley escarpment.

Check in to your lodge in Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, or Rushaga sector (assigned based on your gorilla group permit).

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Morning briefing at 8:00 AM at the ranger station. Trek through the impenetrable forest with your expert guide and ranger team. The dense canopy, ancient trees, and mountain mist make Bwindi feel truly primordial.

Spend one hour with the gorilla family, watching silverbacks, mothers with infants, and playful juveniles in their natural forest habitat.

Afternoon: Optional Batwa cultural trail, learn about the traditional forest-dwellers who coexisted with gorillas for centuries before the park was gazetted.

Day 3: Bwindi Exploration / Fly Camp Return

Full day at leisure in Bwindi. Optional bird walk (Bwindi has 350+ bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics), or guided nature walk through the forest. Return transfer toward Kampala or continue to Kigali.

Day 4: Departure

Morning departure to Entebbe/Kampala for international flights, or continue to Kigali, Rwanda for an East Africa combination itinerary.
