Kigali Genocide Memorial Grounds

Kigali Genocide Memorial Grounds is one of the eight main memorial sites in Rwanda that was inaugurated as a place of remembrance of the victims of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi. The memorial which is located in Kigali city in Gisozi a few kilometers from the administrative and city center of Kigali is a home and final resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the genocide against Tutsi.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial Grounds is known as the largest of the all the memorial sites across the country, it consists of several halls that include three permanent exhibition halls which document the genocide against Tutsi, with thousands of photos of many of the victims hanged on the walls, there is a children’s exhibition room and another room which displays details of genocidal information from across the world.

Another remarkable area is the burial place which has mass graves laid in three rows in memory of all that were killed and buried at the memorial, up to now more people/victim remains are brought to the memorial grounds to be buried in a dignified way. There is also a big and well-constructed amphitheatre that hosts memorial events, educational workshops and visitors can seat in and listen to recordings of how the Genocide against the Tutsi took place, testimonies from survivors and learn on how the people of Rwanda have embraced peace and reconciliation to never again, and are now living in harmony with each other and progressing towards the development of their country.

On your visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial grounds, you can also visit the library which consists of all the Genocide archives, there is a café and gift shop as well as beautiful and quite gardens that provide a very quiet ambiance for visitors to reflect on the Genocide against the Tutsi and pay respect the lost lives in order to prevent any more ass atrocities.
