Ol Pejeta Conservancy, on the Laikipia plateau in the shadow of Mount Kenya, is one of Africa’s most successful conservation stories and a superb Big Five destination.

A rhino sanctuary

Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and is home to the world’s last two northern white rhinos, kept under round-the-clock protection. It is also home to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which cares for rescued chimps.

Wildlife and conservation

Alongside the rhinos, the conservancy supports lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, cheetah, and Grevy’s zebra. Its model blends wildlife protection with livestock and community development, and visitors can take guided rhino and lion-tracking experiences.

Getting there

Ol Pejeta is around three to four hours by road from Nairobi, or a short flight to Nanyuki, and combines well with Mount Kenya and the Maasai Mara.
