Uganda is one of the best countries in East Africa for travelers who want to combine wildlife, primates, forests, mountains, and local culture in one trip. The country has 10 national parks, managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). These parks are spread across different parts of the country, and each one offers a different experience.
For travelers planning a safari in Uganda, the choice of national park depends on what they want to see and do. You can go on a classic game drive in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls, track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga, or explore the more remote landscapes of Kidepo Valley.
Here are some of the main parks and experiences to consider when planning a Uganda safari.
Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest national park and is known for its powerful waterfall, where the Nile River passes through a narrow gorge before continuing through the park.
The park is a great choice for a classic Uganda wildlife safari. During game drives, travelers can look for elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, Uganda kob, hartebeests, waterbucks, and other wildlife. With some luck, you may also see leopards.
One of the most popular activities is the boat cruise on the Nile toward the bottom of Murchison Falls. From the boat, you can see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, and many bird species along the river. A visit to the top of the falls can also be included in the safari.
Murchison Falls is a good choice for travelers who want a combination of game drives, boat cruises, and beautiful scenery.
Kibale Forest is one of the best places in Uganda for chimpanzee trekking. The park is also known for its large variety of primates. Uganda Wildlife Authority describes Kibale as one of the country’s main chimpanzee destinations, with about 1,500 chimpanzees found in the park.
A typical chimpanzee tracking experience starts with a briefing before you enter the forest with guides and trackers. You walk through the forest looking for a habituated chimpanzee community. Once you find them, you can watch their movements and behavior while learning more about the forest.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is another excellent destination for a Uganda wildlife safari. The park has open savannah, forests, wetlands, lakes, and the famous Kazinga Channel.
Game drives give you the chance to see elephants, buffaloes, lions, antelopes, and many other animals. The Ishasha area in the southern part of the park is also known for its tree-climbing lions. UWA highlights these lions as one of Uganda’s notable wildlife experiences.
A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel is another major attraction. The channel attracts large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, water birds, and other wildlife.
Queen Elizabeth is a good option for travelers who want several different safari activities in one park.
Bwindi is one of Uganda’s most famous parks and is best known for mountain gorilla trekking. The park is covered by thick rainforest and is home to mountain gorillas.
Gorilla trekking can take several hours because the gorilla family may be deep in the forest. Once the gorillas are located, travelers can observe them in their natural environment while following the instructions of the guides and park rangers.
Bwindi is also a good place to experience the local culture. Travelers can add a Batwa cultural experience to learn about the history and traditional forest life of the Batwa people.
For anyone whose main goal is to see mountain gorillas in Uganda, Bwindi is one of the most important destinations to consider.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is another place where travelers can see mountain gorillas in Uganda. It is part of the larger Virunga mountain ecosystem and has beautiful volcanic mountain scenery.
The park offers gorilla trekking as well as golden monkey trekking. It is a good option for travelers who want a primate experience combined with mountain landscapes.
Mgahinga can also be included in a wider Uganda and Rwanda itinerary because of its location close to the Rwanda border.
Lake Mburo is a smaller park compared with Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth, but it offers a different type of safari experience.
The park is known for animals such as zebras, impalas, buffaloes, giraffes, and other wildlife. Its location also makes it a useful stop for travelers traveling between Kampala or Entebbe and southwestern Uganda.
One advantage of Lake Mburo is the variety of ways to explore the park. Depending on the itinerary, travelers can enjoy game drives and other nature-based activities.
It can be a good choice for travelers who have limited time but still want to include a wildlife experience in their Uganda trip.
Kidepo Valley is in northeastern Uganda and offers a very different experience from the more commonly visited parks in the southwest.
The park is known for its remote location, wide open landscapes, mountains, and wildlife. Because it is farther from the main tourism routes, visiting Kidepo can feel more adventurous and less crowded.
It is a good choice for travelers who want to explore a remote part of Uganda and have more time available for their safari.
Uganda has several other national parks that offer different experiences. These include Semuliki National Park, Mount Elgon National Park, and Rwenzori Mountains National Park. UWA currently lists these among Uganda’s 10 national parks.
Semuliki is known for its forest environment and hot springs. Mount Elgon is suitable for travelers interested in hiking and mountain scenery, while the Rwenzori Mountains are known for their high-altitude trekking and dramatic mountain landscapes.
These parks can be added to a trip depending on the traveler’s interests and the amount of time available.
Uganda can be visited throughout the year, but the best time depends on the type of experience you want.
The drier periods are generally popular for wildlife viewing and trekking because there is usually less rainfall and some roads and trails can be easier to use. The wetter months can also be rewarding because the vegetation is green and the scenery is beautiful.
For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, weather can change quickly in the forest, so travelers should be prepared for rain even during the drier months.
A good safari itinerary should consider the season, the parks you want to visit, and the activities you want to do.
There is no single price for a Uganda safari. The total cost depends on the number of days, the parks visited, accommodation level, number of travelers, type of vehicle, activities, and permits.
Gorilla trekking is usually one of the biggest costs. For foreign non-residents, the standard gorilla trekking permit is currently US$800 per person, according to current 2026 information.
A complete safari package may include accommodation, meals, transportation, a driver-guide, park fees, activities, and permits. When comparing safari quotations, travelers should check exactly what is included and excluded rather than looking only at the final price.
