The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most celebrated safari destination, a vast expanse of rolling grassland that forms the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem.

The Great Migration in Kenya

Between roughly July and October, more than a million wildebeest and zebra cross from the Serengeti into the Mara, and the crossings of the crocodile-filled Mara River are among the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on the planet.

Big cats and Maasai culture

The Mara is renowned for its predators, with lion, cheetah, and leopard all readily seen, and its open plains make for superb game viewing. Visits to Maasai villages offer insight into the culture of the people who have lived alongside this wildlife for generations.

Getting there

The Maasai Mara is reached by road in around five to six hours from Nairobi, or by a short scheduled flight to one of the reserve’s airstrips.
