10 Best Things to Do in Kigali, Rwanda

Kigali is consistently ranked among Africa’s safest, cleanest, and most livable cities. Most gorilla trekking itineraries pass through Kigali, and it is well worth adding an extra day or two to explore the city. Here are the top experiences.

1. Kigali Genocide Memorial

The Kigali Genocide Memorial is both a burial site and a museum documenting the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. It is a sobering, essential visit for understanding Rwanda’s history and its extraordinary journey toward reconciliation. The memorial is thoughtfully presented and requires 2-3 hours.

2. Kimironko Market

Kigali’s largest market is a sensory immersion in everyday Rwandan life. Browse fresh produce, fabrics, crafts, and household goods. Bargaining is expected and the atmosphere is friendly. Go on a Saturday morning when it is at its most vibrant.

3. Inema Arts Center

Inema is a contemporary art gallery and studio founded by two self-taught Rwandan brothers. It showcases some of East Africa’s most dynamic visual art and is a great place to find unique, locally made pieces to bring home. Open daily.

4. Nyamirambo Neighborhood Walking Tour

Nyamirambo is Kigali’s most culturally vibrant quarter, a predominantly Muslim neighborhood with mosques, tailors, bars, and restaurants lining its streets. The Nyamirambo Women’s Center runs walking tours that support local women entrepreneurs. Highly recommended.

5. Kigali Car Free Day

On the last Sunday of each month, major streets in Kigali close to vehicles. Cyclists, runners, and walkers take over. If your visit overlaps, this is a wonderful way to see the city and interact with locals.

6. Heaven Restaurant

One of Kigali’s best dining experiences. Heaven serves Rwandan and international cuisine in a beautiful hilltop setting with city views. Their brochettes (grilled skewers) and grilled tilapia are excellent. Book in advance for dinner.

7. Caplaki Crafts Market

The one-stop shop for Rwandan handicrafts: woven baskets, soapstone carvings, wooden masks, jewelry, and textiles. Prices are fixed and reasonable. A good alternative to Kimironko Market if you prefer a calmer shopping experience.

8. Kandt House Museum of Natural History

This small museum in one of Kigali’s oldest buildings covers Rwanda’s natural history, ecology, and conservation story. The gorilla conservation exhibit is particularly well done.

9. Rooftop Bar at Kigali Marriott

Sunset drinks from one of Kigali’s highest rooftop bars offer sweeping views over the city’s distinctive rolling hills. The cocktail list is long and the atmosphere is relaxed.

10. Boat Ride on Lake Kivu (Day Trip)

Two hours from Kigali, Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Rift Valley lakes. A boat trip to Monkey Island and the lake’s surrounding hills makes a beautiful day trip. Gisenyi and Kibuye are the main access points.
