Gorilla Trekking Age Limit in Rwanda

If you are planning a gorilla trek in Rwanda, one of the first practical questions to answer is whether everyone in your group is old enough to go. The Gorilla Trekking Age Limit in Rwanda is 15 years. Anyone younger than 15 is not permitted to take part in gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. There is, however, no general maximum age, so you can be 60, 70 or older and still go gorilla trekking, provided you are physically able to manage the walk.

This is one of those rules that is worth knowing before you start planning your itinerary, especially if you are travelling as a family.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Trek Gorillas in Rwanda?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years. This applies to visitors joining the standard gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park. The age requirement is part of Rwanda’s gorilla tourism regulations and is intended to help protect both visitors and the gorillas.

Gorilla trekking is not quite the same as visiting animals in a conventional wildlife park. In this case, you are walking through their natural habitat, usually on uneven and steep terrain, and you have to follow specific rules once you find the gorilla family. One of those rules is to not be noisy or disruptive toward the gorillas as you observe them, and another rule is maintaining a safe 7m distance, both of which a child may find challenging or uninteresting. As such, for the safety of children, and the enjoyment of the overall group during trekking, Rwanda therefore maintains these minimum trekking age.

There is also the health consideration. Mountain gorillas are susceptible to some human illnesses, which is one reason visitors are required to follow strict health and distance guidelines during the encounter.

If you are travelling with children under 15, this does not mean they have to miss out on Rwanda altogether. We often arrange engaging side quests for our clients children to remain occupied and experience the wonder of the volcanoes region. You can build other experiences into the trip, including cave visits, cultural experiences, plantations and museums, the twin lakes, wildlife viewing in Akagera National Park, and many other experiences for children or the whole family.

Is There a Maximum Age for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda?

There is no general upper age limit for gorilla trekking in Rwanda. This is good news for older travellers who have always wanted to see mountain gorillas. Your age itself is never an issue while trekking in Rwanda. What matters much more is whether you are comfortable walking through a forest where the terrain can be steep, muddy, uneven and slippery. Particularly since there is no way to know exactly what the trek will look like before you start. Some days, a gorilla family may be relatively close to the trailhead. On another day, you could spend several hours walking uphill and through dense vegetation before finding them. That is why we normally advise older travellers to think about mobility and fitness rather than age when deciding whether gorilla trekking is right for them.

Can Seniors Go Gorilla Trekking?

Many older travellers go gorilla trekking in Rwanda, and you do not need to be an expert hiker to do it. The park prioritises older trekkers, and assigns the closest and easiest gorilla families to track. This means that, in some cases, hiking to find the gorillas can take less than an hour.

You should, however, be realistic about what the forest is like. Volcanoes National Park is a mountainous environment, and the trek can involve slopes, muddy paths, roots and uneven ground. Rain can make the trails more slippery.

If you are concerned about the physical side of the experience, there are ways to make the trek more manageable. You can hire a porter to carry your backpack and provide physical support on difficult sections. It is also worth discussing any mobility concerns with your tour operator before the trek so that the park team can take your fitness level into consideration when assigning a gorilla family. You can also hire a stretcher if needed during your trek. The important thing is not to arrive expecting a completely predictable hike. Gorilla trekking is a search through an active forest, and the gorillas decide how much walking you are going to do that morning.

Can Teenagers go Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda?

Teenagers aged 15 and above can take part in gorilla trekking in Rwanda. For a teenager who already enjoys wildlife, hiking or outdoor adventures, this can be an incredible experience. But it is worth explaining beforehand that this is not a zoo visit or a typical game drive.

Once you are in the forest, everyone needs to listen to the guides and follow the gorilla trekking rules. Visitors are expected to remain calm around the animals, keep the required distance and avoid actions that could disturb the gorillas.

It is also worth preparing teenagers for the possibility of a long walk. The fact that they are young does not necessarily mean their trek will be easy. The terrain and location of the gorilla family still determine how physically demanding the morning becomes.

Why Is the Minimum gorilla trekking Age 15 in Rwanda?

The 15 year minimum is partly about the nature of the experience itself. Gorilla trekking requires visitors to walk through a mountainous forest environment and follow instructions carefully once they encounter the gorillas. It also involves strict health and wildlife protection measures because mountain gorillas can be vulnerable to human illnesses. Keeping younger children out of the trekking experience reduces some of these risks and makes it easier for the park authorities to manage the interaction responsibly. It can be disappointing if your child is 14 and has been dreaming about seeing gorillas, but the age rule is not something tour operators can simply make an exception to.
